Big difference: Sjogren's syndrome is caused by an autoimmune disorder and decreases the aqueous or water portion of your tear film. The tear film on the ocular surface has three layers: oil, water (thickest layer), mucus (front to back). Dry eyes are more common and are usually caused by excess evaporation of the tear film (usually due to decreased oil layer and decreased adhesion of mucus layer as we age).

Sjögren's is a cause: Dry eye is an umbrella term with many underlying causes. Sjögren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease associated with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis and is a result of the immune system attacking the lacrimal and salivary glands resulting in severe dry eyes and dry mouth. It can be tested by blood tests or biopsy.
