A member asked:

Is it better for my liver and fetus to try psychotherapy instead of medications?

Yes: Psychotherapy or counseling will not affect the liver or fetus. Acupuncture may also be tried for anxiety and/or depression. Drug therapy should be utilized when other less invasive treatments fail.

Psychotherapy: Without question. Most psychotropic medications can have serious, deleterious effects on a developing fetus.

How about both?: Most psychotropic medications are acceptable during pregnancy to help stabilize the psyche and mood of the gravida. Psychotherapy works in some cases given enough time, however frequently medications are also required to achieve the therapeutic goal. A maternal-fetal medicine and psychiatry specialist are essential to answer these questions for you.

What issues are you: Treating? Of course, when pregnant it is better to consider psychotherapy, however, sometimes meds are necessary. Consult with your doctor to assess the risks of taking medication as opposed to being ill.
