Yes, it depends : On residual liver function and whether or not cirrhosis causes portal hypertension or ascites. Also depends if the underlying condition is being effectively treated.

Cirrhosis terminal: Cirrhosis of the liver is considered a terminal disease - eventually, the liver will fail and the person will die. However, people can live for many years with cirrhosis and have an active and meaningful life. Depending on the disease process, the symptoms and progression of the disease can be controlled and slowed. However, as the liver failure worsens, you should be listed for liver transplant.
