Spine alignment: Normal spine is straight from the front. From the side there are typically 3 curves (swayback in the neck and lumbar spine, and roundback in the thoracic spine). Abnormal curves create an s-shaped pattern (scoliosis) from the front. Not typically a problem in adults unless severe. Loss of the swayback (kyphosis) or exaggeration of the normal thoracic kyphosis can be painful and disabling.
