Two approaches: A type 1 diabetic has lost his/her ability to produce the sugar lowering protein called insulin. Without that ability, their system cannot automatically adjust to their sugar intake during meals or snacks. To achieve lower blood sugars, they must either eat less sugar generating foods (carbs) or take more insulin.
