What are the causes of an enlarged thyroid and how to avoid it?

Many possibilities: An enlarged thyroid (goiter) has many causes. Are thyroid blood levels (tsh, ft4) normal? If not, then one thinks about hyper/hypothyroidism, graves disease, hashimotos, etc. Is the goiter nodular or smooth? This may require an ultrasound, with biopsy of suspicious nodules. In younger people, hashimotos is very common. Low grade inflammation, eventual hypo. There's no way to avoid this.
