What is the purpose of the cotton that is placed in bottles of pain relievers?

To make you happy: When i asked around by this i was given several reasons. The ones that made most sense to me were: 1) prevent pill breakage when shaken 2) it makes the customer happy because there is a nice clean fluffy white cotton ball - that way you know it is a fresh bottle and not used.
