Would an ordinary cotton line be used like floss?

No: There are so many different types of floss on the market so as the saying goes there is nothing like the real things.

Don't recommend it.: I don't know for certain what an ordinary cotton line would be, but I do know that dental floss is made to not leave fibers behind as you use it. Floss is the best thing, therefore, to use.
