Get Neuropsych eval!: The most reliable diagnostic tool for determining add/adhd is having a neuropsych eval with a neuropsychologist. This is a battery of tests which together profile some aspects of brain function, including distractability.Bring results to your doctor and discuss. Keep in mind that even if he is willing to prescribe stimulant meds, you alone must evaluate whether you can take them w/o risking relapse.

Be open...: Being open and honest from the beginning helps establish a trusting relationship. Aside from talking with your provider there are also tests to aid in diagnosing adhd accurately. There are a number of treatments available for adhd that are not addicting as well.
