Lumbar McKenzie: For lumbar pain of degenerative origin, including herniated discs, evaluation by a certified mckenzie pt is my recommendation. This requires a doc's rx, but is well worth it. With proper instruction after a thorough functional evaluation, this program has the best result for my patients over the past 15 years. You can obtain the book "treat your own back" by robin mckenzie for about $10 online.

Exercise: Start with core strengthening exercises, either with a physical therapist, or a trainer, on your own. Chiropractors and interventional pain management specialists can offer several options to help alleviate the pain without surgery. If the pain remains debilitating despite trying all of the non-surgical options fail, then it would be appropriate to explore your surgical options.
