A member asked:

How plausible is it for hpv to be spread through non-sexual or proxy contact (one not washing hands properly someone touching door handle after them)?

Not impossible but..: By far, genital hpv is more commonly and more easily transmitted via sex. Plus, certain strains have a higher affinity for certain types of skin cells. Infection requires contact between skin cells and live virus. The virus must attach to cell receptors and get into a cell. Direct contact, microtrauma to skin and high viral load all favor infection. Sex is better than door knobs for transmission.
