Yes it usually does: Hyderea is commonly used to lower the WBC count. But it does not do much to the basic leukemia process. Have you considered a bone marrow transplant as a treatment for your leukemia?. I realise it is awfully expensive and may not be covered by insurence but it is worth exploring.

AML and Hydrea (hydroxyurea): Hydrea (hydroxyurea) can definitely make white cells lower and will help calm down the aml, but it doesn't have the ability to put AML into remission. Its effects are usually temporary. Have a long talk with your oncologist about all possible options at this point so you can make an informed decision. Please consider stopping smoking in the meantime, because cigarettes are one of the things that can cause aml.
