A member asked:

My baby girl was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia in 2006, and now he is diagnosed w/ aml. is this possible?

Very sad but..: This is a terrible situation. Unfortunately sometimes the treatment for acute lymphocytic leukemia can lead to damage of the normal bone marrow cells and lead to a secondary AML (acute myeloid leukemia). It sounds like that may have happened in this case. So sorry to hear this.

Yes, unfortunately: How horrible. Unfortunately, one of the late effects of the treatment for all is secondary leuekemias. This is rare, but it does happen. The work-up will be similar to when she had aml. But the treatment is quite different. Good luck to you all.
