Family practice : Back pain is one of most common complaints we see people for in our drs office. Depends on severity of symptoms. Was there trauma. How active you are and how active you want to be. Some may heal in time on their own. However physical therapy will help you get better quicker. Stengthening exercises , Ibuprofen , and ice/heat compresses may help. If pain persists may need to see a neurologist.

Physical Therapy 1st: Most persons with this diagnosis do not have a "surgical" problem, but benefit from physical therapy (possibly including traction), strengthening and stretching exercises, anti-inflammatory medicine, and ice/heat/ultrasound or a combination. If there is significant weakness, bowel or bladder dysfunction, of if it is progressive, then involving neurology or neurosurgery would be helpful.
