Antivirals: If you know that every time you get a cold, you get a cold sore (herpes simplex), it's definitely worth talking to your doctor about having a prescription of antiviral medication like valacyclovir or famcyclovir that you can start when the cold starts just to prevent a cold sore. If this happens often, your doctor may consider giving you daily antiviral meds to keep the outbreaks suppressed.

Options: Melissa officinalis or lemon balm (cream) has been shown in european studies to help expedite healing of cold sores. It can reduce healing time by half. Studies also show that regular use can help v recurrences. Brief supplementation with lysine 1, 000mg orally three times a day at the onset, can also hasten healing.
