Sounds troubling: Hope this is a miscommunication. Techniques of cautery and knife are both used in surgery. Cautery, a controlled delivery of current which "burns" tissue has the benefit over knife of less bleeding. If there was an "inadvertent" injury to your bowel during your surgery it is okay to ask your surgeon for more details. Injury would be documented, repaired and expected to heal. Good luck.
