A member asked:

I have multiple sclerosis and have had 22 mri's with gadolinum in the last 10 years. does this put me risk of cancer?

Probably not: Gadolinium is a paramagnetic substance that enhances MRI images when given intravenously. It is not clearly associated with any cancers. It is largely inert in humans and completely eliminated from the system in a fairly short period of time, though in patients with kidney failure there are rare cases of kidney damage from repeated injection.

No additional risk: No. The MRI posses no cancer risk as there is no ionizing radiation associated with the scan. The gadolinium is a potential nephrotoxin(kidney) in patients with impaired renal function. Typically bun/creatinine levels are checked prior to the administration of gadolinium.

NO radiation: MRI's use magnets, not radiation. No known risk of cancer.
