Depends: Chronic is either from chronic bronchitis from smoking, gastric reflux, cough variant asthma, post nasal drip, etc. Therefore the underlying condition needs to be identified and treated. Suggest seeing md. May need chest x-ray and lung function test.

Treat the cough.: A good general non-sedating cough suppressant would be Benzonatate, available by prescription. Even better, though, would be to treat the cough - allergic, inflammatory, irritative, infectious, pulmonary, even gastrointestinal causes exist for a cough, and finding and treating the specific mechanism would be best. You need to see a doctor for a good exam.
