A member asked:

Why are human endogenous retroviruses (herv's) "activated" in some people, but not in others, when exposed to exogenous viruses? genetic mutations?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

HERV: Impossible to cover this in 400 characters. See review in mol. Pathol 56:11-18, 2003. These nucleic acids inserted into cells of jawed vertebrates have often integrated themselves into the animals genome and may perform functions, although with time most appear to have been inactivated or suppressed by other cell mechanisms. Also see "lives of cell" by lewis thomas. Great reading.
