Hot flashes: If you are peri-menopausal, or menopausal, there are many things that could be helpful for your symptoms. You can try holistic remedies such as black cohosh, soy products, evening primrose ( find them at costco or your drug store). Sometimes "gabapentin" may help hot flashes, and insomnia from menopausal symptoms. There are some reports that ssris such as pacil or Lexapro (escitalopram) might help as well.

HRT an option: Aside from the natural products, HRT is also a very effective treatment option for hot flash. Please have a frank discussion with your doc about this option as well. The main thing is: everyone is different. What works for one person might not work for the next person. Talk to your doctor and keep an open mind as you try the different options.
