Yes, possible: A number of things can cause irregular bleeding like you describe, but pregnancy is always the most important thing to check for first. A visit to the doctor could involve : labs, testing thyroid, sono looking for ovarian cysts, - or maybe just observation (if you are not pregnant) to see if the periods don't return to normal on their own.
