Not to worry: Since fifth disease is caused by a virus and is generally a mild, self-limiting disease (that means you really don't need to do anything about it!), no need worry. That goes for your 8 month old as well. Only problem that is serious is if a pregnant woman who has never had it gets a primary infection. That can pass to unborn baby and cause problems with the blood cells. If pregnant, let doc know.

Fifth disease: Fifth disease is caused by parvovirus b19. After infection, person usually gets sick in 1-2 weeks with fever, "slapped" cheeks & lacy, figurate rash on trunk & extremities. Kids handle b19 pretty well, adults may have severe joint pain. Disease is dangerous to pregnant women who never had b19 & immunosuppressed people. Sometimes rash is hard to differentiate from rheumatic fever so get it checked.
