Inflammation: It could be inflamed, if you slept on it that night. You could have some hard wax in the canal that got compressed from sleeping on it, causing irritation. This would usually cause blockage in the ear. Some people grind their teeth in their sleep and they don't know it and that can cause intense pain, mild swelling around the affected jaw joint next to the ear. Outer ear infections drain pus.
