Sprain or strain: The most common cause would be a back sprain or strain, where the inflammation is the body reacting to damage to the ligaments or tendons in the back. Chronic overuse, caused by exercise or hard work might also cause inflammation. Less commonly, there are diseases which cause degeneration (damage) to muscles, which could cause inflammation.
