Autoimmune disease: Autoimmune diseases can be caused by several different mechanisms but all can result in damage to self-tissues. At times, blood cells attack normal tissue and in other situations, antibodies can inappropriately bind to normal tissues. Each disease has its own mechanism(s) and target organs. Some times viruses invade cells and viral proteins on the cell's surface are targeted by the immune system.
