Evaluation: You need to be examined by a dentist to determine the cause of your problem and possible treatment options. You may be grinding your teeth. Dental offices see patients without insurance. Many dental insurances do not cover TMJ problems anyway, so you would still have out of pocket expense. Try being seen at a local hospital with a dental residency program or a dental school for reduced fees.

Ask your physician: The treatment of TMJ is not necessarily expensive but is covered by many medical plans and certainly should be. If you do not have any coverage and no possible way of paying for treatment at least take it easy on your joint. Do not chew gum or over stress your joint, use over the counter medications like Motrin or advil (ibuprofen). Warm moist heat can also helpful for many TMJ patients.

OTC guard: There are many otc guards available today at drug stores or online. They help many people. A sports guard can even help. Professional by a dentist is best.

Consult: You might consider finding a tmj/tmd specialist that can provide a free consultation with you. After the consult, it might give you a better idea of what direction to go to obtain treatment.

TMJ treatment: Temporo-mandibular disorder is the second most frequent cause of orofacial pain after dental pain. Proper diagnosis is the key to the successful treatment. See an orofacial pain practitioner for a consultation and management. TMJ disorder is covered under medical insurance and not dental. Take care.

A few things.: Depends on symptoms, and cause of symptoms. 3 signs of TMJ dysfunction: joint noises, joint pain & limited oral opening. Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.
