Urticaria: Hives can affect internal organs as well as the skin including muscles, lungs or gastrointestinal tract with symptoms such as muscle soreness, vomiting or diarrhea. Usual chronic hive outbreaks last from 30 minutes to 36 hours with welts and swellings disappearing and new hives developing all the while. Conditions such as heat, exertion or stress can make symptoms worse.

No, but...: Acute urticaria usually resolves within 6 weeks and are often triggered by foods, drugs, venom stings, viral infections, stress, etc. Chronic hives lasting >6 weeks does require further workup including CBC, hepatic (liver) panel and TSH (thyroid) labs in order to rule out systemic causes of hives. See an Allergist for more details regarding appropriate treatment and evaluation.
