Why would my gastroenterologist order a breathing test to find the level of bacteria in my body?

H pylori test: This is a test to check for h pylori bacteria in the lining of the stomach which cause stomach ulcers. If present then a combination of acide reducers an d antibiotics can be used to clear the infection and heal the stomach ulcers.

Stomach/sm. bowel: Breath tests can be done to check for active infection of the stomach and duodenum with h. Pylori, which can cause inflammation, ulcers, can be associated with stomach cancer, lymphoma. Breath tests can also be done to check for bacterial overgrowth in the small bowel (can cause gas, bloat, diarrhea, +/- pain), as well as malabsorption of various sugars (lactose, fructose, sucrose).

Bacterial overgrowth: You eat a pudding that has a radioactive tracer. The gut bacteria eat the pudding that you just ate, releasing the tracer into your breath, where we measure it.
