Is it possible to get a second opinon on a behavioral health diagnosis?

2nd opinion: Absolutely, one should obtain a 2 nd opinion if in doubt about any diagnosis. Make sure you are seeing a psychiatrist who is board certified. You should probably decide ahead of time what you will do if the second dr agrees with the first dr, and what if the diagnosis is different. Will you seek a 3rd opinion?

Sure: You can get a second opinion for a psychiatric diagnoses, but then the question becomes why did the patient not trust their psychiatrist. This may be indicative of paranoid ideation, psychotic denial,  facticious disorder, malingering, med seeking, delusions or even a personality disorder. Initial impression is more important for formulating the treatment plan, but if the treatment has not been has not been helpful then a second opinion/consultation would be best for all.

Yes: You have the right to obtain second opinions regarding anything that has to do with your health. When obtaining a second opinion, be sure to be clear with the individual whom you are going to for the second opinion why you need a second opinion. Explain what your concerns were with the first opinion. Be certain that your expectations are within reason.
