Different parts : The vitreous is the gel that fills the cavity of the eye behind the lens and iris. The retina is the lining of the back of the eye that contains the rods and cones, the cells that receive light energy and sends it to the brain.

Not the same: The retina is the light receptive nervous and cellular layer that lines the back of the eye and allows for vision. The vitreous is a non=vascular gel that fills the whole back of the eye behind the lens. It holds everything in place and is energy absorbent which is why boxers can get away with what they do.

Vitreous is a gel: vitreous is a gel that fills the big cavity in front of the retina which lines the back of the eye. The vitreous allows light to pass through it and the retina turns the light into electrical impulses that communicate with the brain to give sight.
