Patella fracture: A fractured patella often is the result of a direct blow such as in a fall. The knee can swell fairly significantly. Inability to straighten out the knee can indicate fracture. Sometimes a gap in the fracture can actually be felt through the skin. Inability to hold the knee straight while lifting it off the floor may also indicate fracture.

Yes: Your patella can fracture like any other bone. They can be nondisplaced or displaced fractures. Displaced fractures will cause loss of knee extension with pretty notable deformity and swelling about the knee. Hairline or nondisplaced fractures will typically just cause pain over the knee cap or with motion.
