What determines whether a cast or immobilizer is used for patella fracture?

Varies: If u have a patellar fracture that does not require surgery then a cylinder cast or knee immobilizer is generally used. Either is appropriate.. Casts are sometimes used to ensure the fracture will not 'displace' and in patients who may not follow their doctor's instructions.
