Unknown: I am not aware of any studies that show that cracking/snapping the back (or any joint, for that matter) is detrimental, and similarly, i am not aware of any studies showing that it is good for it. If you are referring to chiropractic manipulation, there are studies that show improvement of back pain with chiropractic treatment.

It is not good or : Bad. With motion certain structures can change position and cause this sound or sensation which can range from muscle, tendon, ligament or joint mobilization. There is nothing harmful about this. Some people feel less stiff when they do this and it is a form of self manipulation.
