Depends: There is a spectrum of disease when it comes to achilles tendinitis/tendinosis. An MRI can identify if it is achilles' tendon disease vs. Inflammation of the lining around the tendon. Rest and physical therapy usually ameliorates the problem, but sometimes operative treatment with debridement and even tendon transfer is required.
