ADHD: It was probably the doctors choice. Both drugs work well.

Shorter acting: In the average adult, aderall lasts 4 hours ad ritaln only 2 1/2 hours. This causes more rebound, more inconvenience, etc. I usually try Adderall first. If it doesn't work after usual dose adjustment, a few folks respond to Ritalin (methylphenidate) and not to adderall. Despite this, some docs, especially if not familiar with adhd or treating mostly kids, use Ritalin (methylphenidate) first, thinking wrongly that its less abusible.
