Radioactive iodine: Following surgery to remove the thyroid gland and surrounding lymph nodes, radioactive iodine( rai) is commonly used. Thyroid cells have a unique ability to take up iodine is our body. So any lingering cells would absorb the rai and be killed. This can treat cells spread outside the neck too. If there is a bone tumor, external beam radiation can relieve the pain. Clinical trials also an option.
