No: Consuming sugar does not cause diabetes. However gaining weight as a result of eating too many calories, including sugar, increases the risk of developing diabetes.

Diabetes: Many factors can contribute to diabetes, and eating excessive amount of sugar can be a risk in individuals who are prone to it. Obesity, inactivity, family history of diabetes are all risks to develop diabetes.
