Not the sugar per se: Diabetes whether type 1 or type 2 is not caused by too much sugar but by not having enough Insulin or an inability to use the Insulin that your body makes to control blood sugars. Type 1 is a genetic disease that as of now cannot be prevented. Eating too much sugar can cause swings in your Insulin levels and weight gain that can make it more likely that you would develop type 2 diabetes.
