Yes: Most OB doctors will perform an internal ultrasound to measure the gestational sac to check the progression of the pregnancy compared to the date of last period, look for fetal heart beat (good sign of a viable pregnancy) and make sure the pregnancy is in the uterus and not in the tube which can be a problem.

Pregnancy & Medicine: Not likely. I am assuming the stick you mention is an ultrasound...? Usually they can find the fetal heart beat with a doppler on the abdomen. The physician, however, may very well do a pap smear during an early visit. But, the obstetrician will be able to explain any procedure so you know what you are experiencing.
