Definitely real: Somatization is simply a way that the human body+brain "redistributes" pain. The pain is real, actually, and experiments have demonstrated that the part of the nervous system responsible is both central ("brain") and peripheral ("body"). An important route for treatment is to explore the psychic pain in one's life. Certain medications may help as well, best prescribed by a psychiatrist.
