Postcolectomy: It is important to drink large volumes of liquid daily. Would recommend at least 8 cups of fluids at least 8 times per day to prevent to stay hydrated. Some suitable fluids include water, diluted orange juice, club soda, decaffeinated tea or an electrolyte sports drink (gatoraid, etc.).

Use your judgement: Function of the colon is to absorb water from so that the liquid form of stool become more solid. Nutrients are absorbed by the small bowel. If you have diarrhea and fluid loss, you will need to increase fluid intake. Don't force yourself to drink too much free water. You may be better with an electrolyte solution like gatorade.
