Improves after birth: My assumption is that the stretch marks are now red and a little raised. This is likely an inflammatory response which will get better after you deliver. An over-the-counter Hydrocortisone cream is often helpful. If not, a prescription strength steroid ointment may be required. Using mild soaps and not scratching helps. I have my patients use Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at night. Ask your dr to see if it is ok.

Rash in stretchmarks: If there is just itching and no rash, it is possible that the skin is stretched and dry, and that is why it's itching. There is also a pregnancy rash that starts at the end of 3rd trimester & usually starts in stretchmarks as small red bumps, hives or blisters or all 3, called puppp. Puppp can mostly be controlled by strong topical steroids, but sometimes requires oral steroids if really extensive.
