50 or earlier: Any patient is a candidate for a colonoscopy, depending on symptoms. Rectal bleeding is frequently evaluated by endoscopy, and colonoscopy exams are performed to diagnose colitis and other medical conditions at any age. Family history of colon cancer may prompt your doctor to recommend colonoscopy much earlier than age 50.

Variable: Normal risk(for colon cancer) persons without concerning symptoms(like blood in the stool) usually don't need to start screening with colonoscopies until age 50. Various medical ailments like inflammatory bowel disease, a familial history of colon cancer or polyps or certain genetic syndrome or concerning symptoms will push recommendations for screening earlier.
