A member asked:

I am very worried about a forthcoming colonoscopy - why would my doctor suggest this?

Could be 'routine'..: Colonoscopy is a screening procedure for colon cancer and polyps (cancer precursors). It is 'routine' to have colonoscopy every few years after the age of 50 to help prevent people from developing colon cancer. If you have concerns, please ask your physician 'why' this test is needed / recommended. (you might think of this procedure like a mammogram or a pap test - screening tests).

Screening: This is a very important examination for patients 50 years or older or those with a history of colon cancer. These examination should be performed at leat every 5 years and remain the gold standad for the early diagnosis of colon cancer.

1. screening 2. symp: Often a colonoscopy is recommended as a screening exam to find who may be at risk and then to prevent colon cancer. It is the single most effective screening tool. However knowing that there has been a history of a non hodgkin lymphoma, if concerns about anemia, blood in the stool, pain, weight loss, change in bowels, a cat scan finding etc- are present, a colonoscopy could be very helpful.
