Ligament: Sprain usually means ligaments while straining is usually muscle or tendon. It if hurts to press, don't do it. And get a thumb spica splint.

Family practice : Either a muscle or tendon strain. Possibly a fracture if trauma was envolved. Pressure is ok. It will tell you when to stop. See your dr if pain persists.
