It sounds like you had a significant hyperextension injury to your thumb and you may have torn some of the ligaments that support your thumb because of the amount of swelling and redness. A doctor needs to check the blood flow to your thumb and assess any possible nerve damage,and any possible fracture/dislocation. ER if high energy injury.
