A virus: Sounds like it may be a viral pharyngitis, which is the doctor term for you have just a sore throat caused by a virus without the other symptoms of what most would consider a "cold (the runny nose, etc). Yes, you can just get the throat symptoms with certain viruses, as adults do when they get laryngitis and lose their voices. In kids, the same virus causes croup. Rest, fluids and time are cures.
