Gas: Left upper abdominal pain relieved by passage of gas occurs because gas stretches the colon wall, which is a painful event. Certain foods can cause increased intestinal gas. For example, people intolerant of lactose in milk can have excessive intestinal gas. There are certain otc medications for intestinal gas which, if it continues or worsens, should be evaluated by a doctor.
