What are the advantages and disadvantages of newborns in prone position?

The prone position: Has been associated with crib death and the supine position is advised. It is "thought" that the infant may suffocate or inhale fire retardant impregnated in the mattress when in the prone position.

Advantage ????: We started seeing the adoption of prone sleeping in the us around ww2 thinking it was safer if they barfed.Cultures that never did had a lower crib death rate. By the 90's studies revealed a lower crib death rate with back sleeping. After it was re- adopted in the us the crib death rate has dropped 40%. I see no benefit of prone sleeping in babies.(they seem to enjoy tummy time more but so what).
