Tooth pain: Two things cause most pain in the body. Trauma, or infection. Same with teeth. Trauma speaks for itself. But trauma can be subtle too from an event days or years before that slowing kills the blood vessels to a tooth. Once that happens pain, and an abscess follow. Tooth decay and gum disease also cause pain. They are infections. Once the toxins of decay reach the center(pulp) pain follows.

Inflammation: A cavity or a crack in a tooth can cause the pulp (nerve) of a tooth to become inflamed. With inflammation, there is a reduced pain threshold that can result in an otherwise non-painful stimulus to cause pain, or pain may occur spontaneously. When the inflammation progresses further down the root canal, the tissues surrounding the root become inflamed. This causes pain to biting and chewing.
